visits hometown
ALCALA -- Lt. Gen. Edward Soriano, commanding general of the 1st Corps of the United States Army in Fort Lewis, Washington D.C., was emotional and very happy to set foot in his town of birth after 50 years.
He left this town when he was just six years old to join his parents in the U.S. where his father worked as captain of the U.S. Army.
This was learned from Mayor Manuel Collado who further disclosed that Soriano still has many relatives here in both paternal and maternal sides, one of who is the sister of his mother.
Collado said it was the 129th foundation day of Alcala as a town, "so we invited him as guest of honor and speaker for him to be emulated by our youth here."
Soriano purportedly stayed for a day during September 19 to 20 celebration of the town fiesta after coming from Baguio City.
He stayed overnight in this town to attend the reunion of their clan on the 20th.
The three-star general is not a graduate of Westpoint but from the ROTC "but through perseverance, he said, he was able to reach the rank, the only Asian who holds the rank of three-star general in the U.S. Army," Collado said.
The mayor said Soriano vowed to return after he retires from the military service. The US general is now 57 years old.
Collado expressed joy the town has already recovered after having been secluded from the rest of the country when it had been the focus of attention due to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars).
"So I made this move so that Alcala could have a good news that could offset the negative effect of the Sars news in this town. I invited the general to change perception about us," he said. Admitting that the Sars issue had affected the economy of the town, Collado said "everything now is normal unlike at the height of the Sars scare." FPM
